Your Honda generator engine is designed and manufactured to precise specifications to ensure years of trouble-free operation. This includes the fuel system. However, the properties of the fuel you use can quickly deteriorate and cause starting or running problems and, in some cases, damage to the fuel system. The good news is most fuel-related problems can be avoided by following a few simple steps.

Follow These Steps to Prevent Most Fuel-Related Problems

Refer to your owner’s manual for additional information.

Storing Your Honda Generator for More Than 4 Weeks (30 days)

Storage Time: 1 to 2 months 

1. Fill the tank with fresh fuel with added fuel stabilizer. If the tank is only partially filled, air in the tank will promote fuel deterioration during storage. 

2. If adding a fuel stabilizer to the fuel for the first time, run the engine outdoors for 10 minutes to be sure the treated petrol has replaced the untreated petrol throughout the fuel system. 

Note: 

• All stabilizers have a shelf life, and their performance will deteriorate over time. 

• Fuel stabilizers will not reconstitute stale fuel. 

3. Stop the engine and close the fuel cap vent. Store your generator and fuel storage container in a cool dry area. 

Storage Time: 2 to 12 months (or less than once a month operation) 

1. Drain the carburetor following the directions shown in your owner’s manual. 

2. Close the fuel cap vent. Store in a cool dry area. 

Storage Time: More than 1 year (long term storage) 

1. Drain the fuel tank and carburetor following the instructions in your owner’s manual. 

2. Close the fuel cap vent. Store in a cool dry area.

Fuel in Your Portable Fuel Container 

It is recommended that you use a self-sealing portable fuel container for refueling your generator. This will help to prevent fuel vapors from escaping and also prevent moisture from being drawn back into the container. This, along with adding fuel stabilizer, will substantially help to keep the fuel volatile and help prevent fuel-related problems.

If stabilized fuel has been in your portable storage container for 12 months, We suggest disposing of the fuel safely and responsibly.  Add fuel stabilizer to the portable fuel container when you refill it.

FUEL FRESHNESS AND TROUBLESHOOTING 

Engine performance is directly related to the quality and freshness of the petrol consumed. Therefore, it is important to be sure the fuel within the engines you are servicing is usable for your testing procedures. You may save valuable troubleshooting time by replacing fuel if its quality or age is in doubt. Detonation (or pinging) on acceleration is an indication that the fuel is either not of good quality or is too low in octane rating for your application. Fuel should be no more than six to eight weeks old.

NOTE • Unleaded petrol has a shelf life of about 3 months

Honda Engine Check List

This is the best time to check you Honda engines are working efficiently and are as ready as you are for the work ahead.  While checking your augers, spray pumps and sowing equipment double check these things to keep your engine in top condition.

1. Check & replace your air filter/s - A dirty or blocked air filter can cause the engine to run rough or may cause increased wear and reducing the life of your Honda engine.
2. Check & replace spark plugs - While checking the plug look at the gap which should be around 1mm (contact us for exact gaps for your honda engine) and check for build up of carbon.  This could be a sign that the air filter needs replacing or your muffler is blocked . Also you may consider having some spare spark plugs on hand in case you need them in a hurry. 
3. Check & replace oil - Honda recommends checking your oil everytime you use the engine and topping up as required.  Honda recommend replacing the oil every year or every 100 hours which ever comes first.  Here is an easy way to keep track of the hours or usage of your Honda equipment (TANK x HOURS per TANK = HOURS USE) 

These three basic items will endure a long life on your engine and minimise break-downs.

Parts Enquiry Tips

If you do need to order parts for your Honda engine you should alway provide a serial number to make sure your authorised Honda dealer is supplying the correct parts for your engine (not all Honda engine models are the same).  This will save you costly shipping fees, travel time and frustration.

Engines not starting or not running correctly, is often due to stale or contaminated fuel.  These issues can often be costly to repair, but dont worry we have the solution.

Have you tried Honda’s fuel stabilizer?

This product will eliminate stale/contaminated fuel concerns for approximately 12 months, if it is used with a fresh container of a known good brand of fuel.

For best results keep fuel container 95% full to minimise oxygen mixing with the fuel and keep the container tightly sealed and out of direct sunlight.

Note: It will not refresh old fuel.

For ease of use mix with the following metric ratio:

1. Long term storage - Add 30cc to ten litres of fuel. Add 15cc to five litres of fuel.
2. Infrequent operation – Add 8cc to ten litres of fuel. Add 4cc to five litres of fuel.
